5 Sustainable Jobs of the Future

Climate change is leading to reduced productivity in the workplace as well as job losses. The global oil, gas, and coal sectors currently employ 18 million people, and according to IEA estimates, more than 5 million jobs can be lost by 2030 if the world is to reach its goal of net zero by 2050.

While this may sound bad, according to IEA report, working towards net zero will open many opportunities for green jobs, and new jobs in clean energy will outweigh the job losses that fossil fuels provide.

What makes a job green?

Green jobs are any jobs that reduce the environmental impact of companies and sectors to levels that are sustainable. The transition to a net-zero future will create new jobs, and these jobs might be fulfilling for some as they help protect the planet. Five potential popular green jobs of the future are

  1. Clean energy engineer

The clean energy sector is becoming a major employer and currently makes up over half of the total energy sector jobs. As the sector continues to grow, the demand for engineers will grow as well.

     2. Sustainable Architect

The building industry is one of the major causes of pollution. They are responsible for a big proportion of global energy-related carbon emissions. The increasing use of eco-friendly materials and minimalistic models for construction can reduce the carbon footprint of buildings. Building the greener homes of the future will play a vital and special role.

     3. Recycling/Upcycling

In the future, we will thrive by reusing, recycling, and upcycling. Millions of jobs can be created by moving away from the current use and discard method and transitioning into the recycle and reuse method.

      4. Urban Farmer

Innovative technology and architecture are being used by urban farmers and will be used in the future, including artificial intelligence to grow crops in cities.

     5. Sustainability Consultant

All companies are transitioning to become more sustainable; a sustainability consultant will help companies with this transition by changing business models, reducing company energy use, emissions, and waste, and doing any investigation to ensure goods and services are sourced sustainably.

Borrum Energy Solutions aims to create jobs in Canada by leveraging Canadian engineering and providing opportunities for individuals to reduce their carbon footprint.
