7 Simple Ways to Save Energy at Home or Cottage

With electricity prices rising out of control across several provinces and the increased electricity demand, households are worried about their energy bills. In this blog, we cover different ways to save energy at home or at cottage and reduce your electricity bills. Before we get started with these steps, first you must know your footprint, where you use the most energy, and where there is room for improvement. On average, as households, we spent most energy on heating/cooling and water heating.

  1. Weatherproof your house
  • Close the gaps to prevent air leaks; install star-certified windows to keep the sun out and cool air in.
  1. Shower Smarter.
  • Water heating is another major household expense. By limiting the length of your showers to five minutes, you can save a lot of energy. A tankless water heater is also a viable option to be investigated.
  1. Check settings on the water heater.
  • If the hot water from the tap almost burns your hand, then your water heater setting is too high and is doing more work than it needs to. Change the setting to lower temperatures to save energy.
  1. Save on Appliance Energy
  • Appliances take a major part of our energy consumption after heating and cooling. To save some energy from appliances, use clotheslines instead of dryers. Make sure your appliances are free of dust and clogs.
  1. Avoid phantom power consumption
  • Plug countertop appliances into a power bar and program it to switch off at night. Make sure no chargers are plugged in when there are no devices being charged, as it still consumes electricity.
  1. Invest in thermostats with timers.
  • You can save energy by simply resetting temperatures for when you are away or asleep. Try not to place heat-generating devices (appliances like TVs or lamps) next to thermostats, as they will trick it to think the room is hotter than it is and make it work harder in the summer.
  1. Choose renewable energy.
  • Choosing to add renewable energy is a step to reduce dependence on grid power. Protect yourself against any future electricity price increases.
