Amlamgog First Nation Launches Clean Energy Microgrid Plan
Amlamlog (Fort Folly) First Nation in New Brunswick is taking a major step towards energy independence. Through a partnership with Foresight Canada, a challenge titled The Amlamgog Community Microgrid Challenge is being launched. This initiative invites innovators across the country to propose scalable clean energy solutions focused on energy security, reducing emissions, and long-term economic sufficiency.
This venture is based on Amlamgog’s strong values for sustainability. In 2024, the First Nation developed a Community Energy Plan that demonstrated that its electricity consumption was almost 50% lower than the New Brunswick average —a result of early investments in clean energy generation on all commercial buildings. Now, the community is aiming to take the next step by integrating distributed generation and storage to further reduce reliance on the provincial grid and strengthen long-term energy independence.
The Microgrid Challenge will spark new ideas and unite those who share a commitment to sustainability. The selected innovator will collaborate directly with Amlamgog leadership to turn their proposal into a working solution tailored to the community’s needs. The goal is to create a microgrid model that is replicable by others, which enhances stability, affordability, and resilience for Indigenous and remote communities across Canada.
This story showcases the importance of grassroots leadership that moves forward the clean energy transition. Despite national attention on megaprojects, communities like the Amlamgog highlight that innovation starts with a solid foundation and builds up.
