Could Sodium-Ion Batteries Support the Future of Home Energy Storage?

Home battery storage is becoming an important part of renewable energy systems. As more homes, cottages, farms, and off-grid properties look for ways to improve energy independence, storage can help make clean electricity more reliable when wind or solar production changes.

A recent Electrek article discussed UNIGRID’s new sodium-ion home battery, called Na+Casa, which has started installation in Europe, with U.S. installations expected by the end of 2026. The battery stores 9.25 kWh of electricity and is designed to work with most existing hybrid inverters, making it useful for both new installations and retrofits.

One of the main reasons sodium-ion batteries are gaining attention is that they do not rely on the same critical minerals often associated with lithium-ion batteries, such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Sodium is more abundant and less expensive, which could make sodium-ion technology an important option for future energy storage.

Compared to AGM batteries, sodium-ion batteries may offer a longer-lasting and more advanced storage option with better cycling potential. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion technology may offer benefits related to material availability, cost, and safety, although lithium-ion batteries are still more common and widely used today.

Battery safety is also a major focus. UNIGRID says the Na+Casa battery is designed to reduce the risk of thermal propagation, which is when battery fires spread from cell to cell. The battery is also designed to last 25 years, roughly matching the lifespan of clean energy generation systems.

Temperature tolerance is another important feature. The battery is designed to operate from -40°C to 60°C, which could make it useful in areas with extreme weather conditions. For rural and remote properties, this kind of durability matters because energy systems often need to perform through seasonal changes, cold weather, and higher demand periods.
