How Canada’s Oneida Battery Project Powers a Clean Energy Future
The Oneida Energy Storage Project, which recently opened in Haldimand County, Ontario, is making big shifts in clean energy. This facility carries 278 large lithium-ion batteries that are each approximately tractor-trailer-sized, which can store up to 25 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The amount of power supplied can power a city of 200,000 people for one hour.
Oneida’s crucial role in Ontario’s electricity is storing surplus energy for when demand is low and releasing it during peak periods. Throughout the project’s expected lifetime, it is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 4.1 million tonnes, an equivalent of removing about 40,000 cars from the road.
The Oneida facility is another step in the broader movement in Ontario towards expanded energy storage capacity, with plans to reach nearly 3 gigawatts by 2028. Battery storage aids the province in balancing the fluctuating supply and demand, making the power grid more reliable and greener.
