Ireland Hit with Record Breaking Winds

Record high winds from Storm Éowyn hit Ireland on Friday, January 24th, leaving injury, loss of power, and cancellation of flights in its wake. The storm was identified to be one of the most dangerous that the country had faced.

The Irish Weather Agency, recorded a 183 km/h gust of wind in the area, this broke an 80-year-old record of 182 km/h. During the gust, the streets of Dublin were deserted as a red wind warning was put out, the highest alert level. This was the first time since 2017 that the country has had this warning put in place.

A significant consequence of the storm was the “unprecedented” damage to its power network, leaving 768,000 homes, farms, and businesses affected. A spokesperson said it would take at least a week to restore power for some individuals.

Borrum Energy Solutions designs microgeneration wind turbines and towers that can withstand 189 km/h winds and -50C temperatures, these wind turbines can help combat the inevitable loss of power that comes with big storms like Storm Éowyn.

Our thoughts are with the people of Ireland during this difficult time. May the community come together to deal with the storm’s damage.
