China Bets Big on Renewable Energy

According to the International Energy Agency, China’s share of final energy consumption from renewables has skyrocketed by 354% since 2000, now making up 11.72% of its energy mix. China also currently accounts for 40% of the global investment into renewable energy. So, why is China investing so heavily in renewable energy?

Clean energy contributed an estimated $ 2 trillion USD to China’s economy last year, accounting for one-tenth of its economy. The clean energy sector is also experiencing significant growth, expanding three times faster than the average industry in China. Furthermore, they invested another 625 billion USD in 2024, showing that this isn’t just an environmental choice, but it also has immense benefits for their economy.

China burns more coal than the rest of the world combined, but they are prioritizing solar and wind power while using more coal to meet demand during peak hours. Plans to build large-scale renewable wind farms and solar farms in the deserts of Western and Northern China are already underway. Between January and May of this year, China installed enough solar and wind capacity equivalent to powering all of Turkey. This will help them to cut back on their fossil fuel and coal usage, not only improving air quality but also making the country more energy independent and self-reliant.
