10 Most Sustainable Countries in 2025
The following is a list of the 10 most sustainable countries in 2025, according to Global Citizen Solutions.
10. Portugal
Portugal places high priority on renewable energy by investing significant amounts into wind farms and solar power plants. In 2019, 54% of the country’s energy came from renewable energy sources. The country has also implemented various sustainability measures like an extensive network of electric buses/trams and water-efficient irrigation systems.
9. Costa Rica
Costa Rica is well known for its amazing natural environment, and to encourage conservation, the government provides financial incentives. One of these incentives pays landowners to restore and conserve forests, it is funded by water charges and fuel taxes.
8. Austria
Austria has the largest percentage of organic agricultural land in the EU. Organic farming reduces chemical pollution, promotes biodiversity, and improves soil health.
7. Germany
Germany’s sustainability mainly comes from a focus on renewable energy sources like wind and solar. The country has a series of laws that create an auction system where producers can acquire wind and solar farms for production through a competitive bidding process.
6. New Zealand
New Zealand has a unique approach to sustainability. The government has given the indigenous Māori people a role in the implementation of sustainability practices because of their strong and invaluable connection to nature and preserving the environment.
5. Norway
Norway makes extensive use of hydropower, because of this the country’s data centers, electric vehicle battery production, and metal processing has some of the world’s smallest carbon footprints.
4. Finland
Finland relies heavily on renewable energy sources and public transportation, but this isn’t the main reason for their sustainability. It is one of the most wooded countries in the world and has developed some of the best forest management practices and legislations.
3. Switzerland
Switzerland’s sustainability comes from the high environmental consciousness of their citizens, with a strong commitment to recycling and other sustainability practices. The government encourages this through regulations related to managing waste, pollution, and resource usage.
2. Sweden
Sweden is always actively working towards achieving and maintaining their Sustainable Development Goals. For example, when the Swedish government realized that extensive air pollution is causing problems, they immediately implemented measures to reduce it.
1. Denmark
In 1973, an oil embargo was implemented against Denmark, this created a need to rethink energy policies and move away from being dependent on imported oil. Since then, Denmark is generating a significant portion of their energy through offshore winds and are looking to completely phase out fossil fuels.
Borrum Energy Solutions designs microgeneration wind turbines and towers that provide Canadians with an opportunity to improve sustainability. The products reduce costs on diesel/propane, dependence on the electrical grid, and carbon emissions.
