Air Canada Fuels Sustainability with First SAF Imports

Air Canada is taking a bold step toward a greener future by introducing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into its operations. Partnering with Neste, the airline has procured 77.6 million liters of SAF, marking its first commercial import into Canada. This milestone aligns with Air Canada’s ambitious goal of sourcing SAF for 1% of its jet fuel consumption by 2025 and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

The SAF, Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, will arrive in a blended form at Vancouver’s marine terminal this month, with ongoing shipments planned through 2024. This collaboration builds on previous deliveries at San Francisco and Amsterdam airports, further solidifying the partnership between Air Canada and Neste.

While SAF presents a significant opportunity to decarbonize aviation, global supply remains limited and costly. Even with production expected to triple in 2024, SAF would only meet 0.53% of aviation’s fuel requirements. Recognizing this challenge, Air Canada is working alongside the Canadian government and industry leaders to enhance domestic SAF availability and affordability.

Borrum Energy Solutions shares Air Canada’s commitment to sustainability. By delivering renewable wind-based energy solutions such as their Anorra wind turbines, they’re empowering dwelling owners to reduce their carbon footprint and embrace sustainability while reducing their dependency on the electrical grid. Together, through innovations in energy and fuel, we can chart a course toward a net-zero future.
