Canada Invests in Renewable Energy for Remote Communities
A substantial number of people around the world (685 million) do not have access to electricity, the majority in remote or rural areas. Those rural communities that do have access to grid electricity have to rely on expensive and polluting fossil fuels that have a negative effect on health and the environment. Supporting these communities in Canada’s shift to clean energy is key to achieving affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for everybody.
In partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Government of Canada is investing $500,000 in transitioning rural areas to renewable energy. This investment will go towards a 3-step plan.
1) Five case studies will be developed about successful and innovative renewable energy projects adopted by remote communities, to show that this transition is feasible.
2) Country-wide assessments of renewable energy potential in remote communities will be conducted.
3) Workshops for community members and policymakers will be organized to develop skills and knowledge related to the planning, installation, operations, and maintenance of renewable energy projects
“Communities around the world deserve to have access to reliable, inexpensive and non-polluting electricity. That is why the Government of Canada is committed to working with rural, remote and isolated communities to advance affordable and accessible clean energy solutions through our partnership with IRENA. We are providing benefits for the communities that currently have the greatest need to access electricity in a way that meets their stated economic and environmental goals.”, said Jonathan Wilkinson, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.
Borrum Energy Solutions shares the goal of supporting rural communities in the shift to renewable energy. Our microgeneration wind turbines and towers provide rural communities an opportunity to reduce fossil fuel costs, carbon emissions, and dependence on the electrical grid.
