How Wind and Solar Overtook Europe’s Energy Mix

2024 has been a game changer for Europe’s energy landscape. In the first half of the year, wind and solar power generated more electricity than fossil fuels – a first for the EU. Renewables made up 30% of the EU’s electricity mix, while fossil fuels lagged behind at 27%. This milestone marks a “historic shift” as Europe accelerates its journey toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.

Fossil fuel generation is in freefall, with coal and gas usage plummeting by 17% overall compared to last year. Countries like Germany, Italy, and France slashed their reliance on coal and gas, while Poland – once heavily dependent on coal – saw its share of fossil fuels drop significantly. Strong winds in northern Europe, along with favorable rainfall that boosted hydropower, further fueled the renewable surge. Even nuclear energy saw a 3.1% rise, adding to the green momentum.

This transformation isn’t just a temporary bump. The ongoing installation of new wind and solar capacity means the EU’s reliance on fossil fuels will continue to decline, making renewable energy the new normal.

Borrum Energy Solutions is onboard with Europe’s clean energy revolution. Their commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with this shift as Borrum Energy Solutions works to bring innovative wind power solutions to dwelling owners to achieve a future powered by renewable energy.
